How to find a hidden water leak

Do this first

The water meter test

1. Turn everything offClose every tap and make sure the washing machine, dishwasher, irrigation and pool top-up aren't running.
2. Read the meterFind your water meter (usually at the pavement or boundary wall) and note the reading, or take a photo.
3. Wait 30 minutesDon't use any water. Flushing a toilet will ruin the test.
4. Read it againIf the numbers or the small leak indicator have moved, water is escaping somewhere.

Warning signs of a hidden leak

• A water bill that jumps without a change in use
• Damp patches, bubbling paint or a musty smell on walls
• Warm spots on tiled floors, often a hot-water leak under the slab
• A toilet that refills on its own, or water running into the overflow
• Unusually green or soggy patches in the garden

Narrow it down

Close the valve to the geyser and repeat the test. If the meter stops, the leak is on the hot-water side. Check toilets by adding food colouring to the cistern: if the colour appears in the bowl without flushing, the valve is leaking.

When to call a plumber
